Includes: Music of the Indians of British Columbia, 147 pages, song transcriptions and a list of illustrations submitted to the Bureau of American Ethnology May 9, 1935 and published in Bureau of American Ethnology Bulletin 136, Number 27. This manuscript was compiled from various manuscripts previously submitted. Old Manuscript Number 1665 "10 Songs of Indians living at Port Simpson and on the Skeena and Nass Rivers, British Columbia." 9 page manuscript, 7 pages descriptive analysis, 20 pages tabulated analysis, 4 pages transcriptions. (1 photo of singer Henry Haldine recorded on old catalog card, is not present). Submitted February 23, 1927. Old Manuscript Number 2238 "15 Songs of Indians on the Sliamey and Homaco Reserves in British Columbia." 9 page manuscript, 3 photo illustrations, 1 sketch, 6 pages descriptive analysis, 30 page tabulated analysis, 5 pages transcriptions, all recorded on the old catalog card are not present. Submitted January 27, 1927. Note on catalog card "combined with British Columbia." Old Manuscript Number 2980 "17 Nitinat war and dance songs, Menominee Songs connected with stories of Manabus and catalog numbers of 184 Menominee Songs." 6 page manuscript, 4 pages catalog numbers, descriptive analysis 6 pages, tabulated analysis, 24 pages; 6 pages transcription. (Menominee material is catalogued # 1609-b). Submitted February 4, 1928. Collected August-September, 1926 at Chilliwack, B. C. Old Manuscript Number 2983 "17 Songs of the Nitinat Medicine Men, and Miscellaneous Nitinat Songs." 8 page manuscript, 4 pages catalog numbers of songs, 7 pages descriptive analyses, 34 pages tabulated analyses, 8 pages song transcriptions. Submitted March 24, 1928. Information collected August-September, 1926 at Chilliwack, B. C. Old Manuscript Number 3059 "12 Songs of Indians Living on the Fraser and Thompson Rivers in British Columbia." 12 page manuscript, 24 pages tabulated analyses , 5 pages transcriptions. (5 photo illustrations recorded on old catalog card are not present). Submitted June 20, 1928. Collected August-September 1926 at Chilliwack, B. C. Old Manuscript Number 3105 "13 Songs of Indians living on the Fraser, Thompson, and Squamish Rivers, in British Columbia." 21 page manuscript, 26 page descriptive analysis. (2 photo illustrations recorded on old catalog card are not present). Submitted November 17, 1928. Old Manuscript Number 3229 (part) "Winnebago, Iroquois, Pueblo, and British Columbia (Nitinat, Fraser and Thompson rivers) Songs.." 5 pages descriptive analysis, 5 pages transcriptions. Old Manuscript Number 3918 Photostat copies of 75 British Columbia songs recorded at Chilliwack, B. C., in September 1926. These copies were made for the 20th Century Fox Film Corp. for use in connection with a Hudson's Bay picture. 2 sets of photostat copies. Also 2 photostat copies of 2 letters sent by F. Densmore to Miss Field, June 16 and June 17, 1937, concerning the use of these songs by 20th Century Fox. Original field notes, "Chilliwack." Approximately 11 handwritten pages. Notes of first page: "Everything either used or discarded--finished November 16, 1928."

Frances Theresa Densmore was born on May 21, 1867 in Red Wing, Minnesota. She studied at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music from 1884 to 1887. Her professional interest in the music of Native Americans dates from the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. In 1905, she made her first visit to the Minnesota tribes and in 1907 began to record Indian music under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of American Ethnology.
